On the internet, you may learn “how to” care for this animal in a variety of methods. This care sheet outlines the method we’ve discovered works best for us throughout the years of breeding and caring for this species.
The Dumerils boa constrictor is a smaller version of the ordinary boa constrictor. They are a threatened species in the wild. This snake should only be purchased from reputable breeders who sell captive-bred stock.
DUMERILS BOA HOUSING
Begin with a 10-gallon container for the infants. You can increase the size of the enclosure after the baby is a year old. Glass aquariums and any of the commercially available plastic-type reptile cages are two examples that work nicely. In the case of yearlings,
Step up to a 30″ x 12″ enclosure (like the Zilla critter cage 20 Long) or a 36″ x 12″ enclosure (like the Zilla critter cage 36 Long) (Exo Terra Large, or Zilla 40 gal). If there is a hide for a shy boa baby on both the cool and warm sides of the enclosure, they will feel more safe (more about that in the heating section).
You’ll need a custom enclosure or one of the large 5+ foot molded plastic reptile cages for an adult. If you have a female, you should prepare for a larger enclosure than if you have a male because females can be much fatter. A 6′ x 2′ cage is a decent starting point, but many individuals have gone bigger and more inventive with their enclosures.
Although they are not real underground reptiles, they enjoy hiding in leaf litter and other detritus. Their colour provides excellent camouflage. For your Dumerils boa, you can choose a variety of bedding options. Zilla jungle mix, Zoo Med snake aspen, and Zoo Med eco earth are the most effective. Burrowing is a favorite pastime of theirs.
Whenever they defecate, spot clean the bedding. You should only have to clean the entire thing once a month or so. At that time, disinfect the enclosure and replace the bedding. Cage cleaning can be done with Zoo Meds wipes or vinegar and water. It’s also acceptable to use newspaper, albeit it doesn’t look as great and you’ll have to replace it all when they defecate on it.
HEAT AND LIGHTING OF DUMERILS BOA
These boas are from a warm semi-arid area, thus they prefer a warm environment. They, like all reptiles, rely on external thermoregulation to keep their body temperature in check. This effectively means that your enclosure must have both a heated and a cool side. All of the heat elements should be on one side, with the cool side on the other. Your Dumerils boa will be able to move back and forth between the different temperatures as needed.
The temperature on the hot side should be around 88-90 degrees. Place one hide on the warmer side and the other on the cooler side. (Hides are not permitted to be used by adults.) The temperature on the cool side might range from 80 to 85 degrees. Extreme temperature dips at night are not advised. A basking light and an under-tank heat pad are also recommended.
Heat pads are normally placed on the hot side and covered with a hide. We propose a Zoo Med or Exo Terra heat pad that stays on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide extra heat during the night. Both of these items are located on the outside of the enclosure, beneath the enclosure. You’ll need a heat pad that covers only half of the tank (or less).
Heat panels are better for large wood or molded plastic enclosures. The basking light should be contained in a good quality light dome, such as those made by Exo Terra and Flukers, that has a ceramic casing and an on/off switch to withstand intense heat.
Also, use a high-quality temperature gauge, such as the Zoo Meds digital temperature gauge or the Exo Terras Thermometer. Don’t make an educated estimate. You can also control your heat source via a rheostat and/or timers. The usage of hot rocks is not advised. They have a proclivity for heating unevenly across a limited region, which can result in significant burns.
HUMIDITY OF DUMERILS BOA
Keep a non-porous water bowl with your Dumerils boa and fill it with clean water at all times. Exo Terras or Flukers water bowls, as well as a good ceramic crock dish, are good decorative options. To prevent bacteria slime from forming, scrub the bowl at least once a week. High humidity is not required for these boas. Your boa should be able to shed correctly if the humidity level is kept between 40 and 60%.

FEEDING OF DUMERILS BOA
You should not handle your snake for several hours before feeding it. You can either feed it in its enclosure or in a feeding tub. It’s entirely up to you. Before they eat, some Dumerils boas don’t want to be moved. Although they have an excellent feeding response, they are normally docile snakes.
Get an excellent snake hook if you’re worried about your pet thinking you’re going to feed it every time you handle it. When you wish to hold your snake, simply hook it out of its enclosure. These hooks are available in two sizes: a collapsible hook for babies and a larger hook for adults. Ball python for sale, Corn snake, Reptiles store, Snakes for sale, Reptiles for sale
When you take your boa out, use a snake hook to drastically limit the possibility of being bitten by a feeding reflex. If you don’t have a hook and yet want to catch your snake, don’t approach it from the front. Pick up your snake from behind by reaching around. That way, your hand isn’t going to hit it in the face.
Hatchlings through two years of age
Once a week, one rodent of proper size. This means the rodent’s girth should not exceed the snake’s girth (at its widest point, not his neck size). Some believe you can feed them rats that are 1 1/2 times the snake’s girth.
Boas, on the other hand, have a slow metabolism, and we’ve found that if you don’t surpass its girth by much, they eat better and don’t skip meals. After your snake has eaten, don’t handle it for at least 24 hours.
Adults DUMERILS BOA
If you like, you can reduce the number of rodents to one every two weeks. If you do this, make sure it’s a substantial dinner and don’t cut corners.
Alternatively, stick to the once-weekly feeding schedule with a slightly smaller meal than if you were feeding every two weeks.
Snakes don’t eat when they’re in the shed in general. Just wait until it has shed before feeding it.
As long as they are warm enough, baby boas will feed throughout the winter. Some adults, on the other hand, may “go off eating” during this time. This is a natural time for them to start breeding and hence consume less. Simply monitor your snake’s overall health and body weight. This is usually not a cause for concern in a healthy boa. Until your snake begins to eat again, feed it every two weeks or so. Ball python for sale, Corn snake, Reptiles store, Snakes for sale, Reptiles for sale
TEMPERAMENT OF DUMERILS BOA
Because of their placid demeanor and beautiful patterns and colors, Dumerils boas make excellent pets with proper management.
Always remember to support your snake’s body when holding it. Boas enjoy exploring, but after a few minutes, they will usually settle down on you. Allow your pet to adjust to your presence.
Touching the top of the head is not a good idea. Touching the top of the head will cause it to jerk back unless it knows and trusts you. The rapid movement is known as “head shy,” and it scares many individuals who are unfamiliar with snakes. With kind handling, most people will be able to overcome it.
Allow at least a day or two for your Dumerils boa to adjust to its new surroundings before touching it. Begin slowly and progressively extend the time you have your snake out. Keep in mind that the fate of your new pet is in your hands. So please take appropriate care of it. Ball python for sale, Corn snake, Reptiles store, Snakes for sale, Reptiles for sale
